Supporters' Views Will Fire Up Football Inquiry!
Trusted View
Saturday, January 22 2011

The government's Culture Media and Sport Committee (CMS) is holding an inquiry into the governance of the UK's professional football clubs.

After high-profile coverage of takeovers, debts and protests at Liverpool, Manchester United, Portsmouth, etc, there is increasing concern that current and future generations of football supporters are ill served by existing football club regulations.

The all-party CMS Committee Inquiry has requested submissions from individual fans, supporters' groups, the clubs and their regulatory bodies.

Many supporters have become disenfranchised by club takeovers. The dissolution of Derby County's Shareholders Association reflects how meaningful democratic participation and influence by the club's fans has been obstructed in recent years.

RamsTrust's contribution on behalf of its membership will detail its experiences of Derby County's governance since 2002. Our primary objective is for greater representation of supporters' views on important decisions that affect the club's future.

The coalition government will promote co-operative ownership of clubs; the CMS Inquiry's purpose is to inform on improved self-regulation or strategic intervention, including assessment of the much-derided “fit and proper persons” test.

Comparative studies of club governance abroad and other sports organisations will also help inform whether our football clubs should be governed differently to other commercial entities.

Clubs are now bought and sold as “brands”, increasingly remote from their community roots; RamsTrust's role is within the growing supporters' movement to reclaim the game by lobbying for change towards democratic club ownership.
