The Derby Evening Telegraph publishes a column by RamsTrust every week on Tuesdays on its dedicated Derby County website. and the Trader Group of free newspapers publishes a weekly column by RamsTrust.

The Trader column is for individual members of RamsTrust to put their point of view across in the media. Although the views will not contravene the principles of the trust, the views expressed are entirely personal to the author and do not necessarily represent RamsTrust policy.

Another fairly awful season is coming to a close and it’s reached the stage where a dire victory over the bottom team to avoid relegation is greeted with a pitch invasion and a ‘conga’ line. Has it really come to this? When Derby sold 20,000+ season-tickets on the back of the worst ever performance in the Premier League, we were promised promotion – or at the very least a competitive campaign.

Derby County’s current predicament as this season’s Premier League whipping boys gives new manager Paul Jewell one of the biggest challenges of his career. He has inherited a beleaguered and battered squad rooted to the anchor spot of the table and although not shipping goals in the way they were doing under Billy Davies, they still concede too easily and score infrequently and so the players’ confidence has been totally eroded.
