For many fans, one of the irritants of following football is the knotty issue of refereeing. On one hand, tune in to any radio phone-in after a day of games and, regular and tedious as clockwork, the furious and the hard-done-by are queuing up to lambast the man (or woman) in the middle for injustices meted out to their team. On the other hand, the moaners often have a point: refs make mistakes - loads of them - and it's not changing. Nothing - not the advent of professional referees - nor any other innovation so far tried - has made a blind bit of difference on that score.

After six matches unbeaten, Paul Jewell seems to have started the turnaround and the mood around the club is showing signs of optimism at last. At the start of the season a position just below mid-table would not have been considered acceptable but now it can be considered as progress after the poor start. Mid-table just could be the best place to finish.

Only time and history will tell if a superb win at the Emirates Stadium – only the second defeat there so far for Arsenal – will be part of a Grand Plan which is sufficient to ensure that a play-off winning club can survive in the Premiership.
