Brian Lomax

RIP Brian Lomax OBE - Founding Father of the Trust Movement

The RamsTrust board was deeply saddened to hear that Brian Lomax  OBE passed away peacefully at home on 2nd November.

Brian was the inspiration behind the Supporters’ Trust movement through his work at Northampton Town in the early 1990s, becoming the first supporter elected director of a football club after the supporters and community rallied  round to save the club in 1992.

This pioneering approach led to the Football Task Force report in 1999 recommending the widespread establishment of Supporters’ Trusts to replicate this work. Brian was instrumental in the formation of Supporters Direct for this  purpose, along with Andy Burnham and Phil French - and was appointed its  first Managing Director. He would later become Chair of the organisation.

In both positions and throughout SD’s existence, Brian’s skills, experience and warmth have been at the heart of our movement and in him we had our truly inspirational founding father.

Back in 2002 when RamsTrust was formed, Brian attended many  meetings and spoke eloquently about the formation of trusts and gave  examples of how a number of Trusts had helped to save their clubs from  going into extinction.

When ourselves and Foxes Trust established the East Midlands Trusts forum in early 2003, Brian often attended meetings when able, arriving at the Marlene Reid Centre in Coalville on his motorbike all the way from Northampton to encourage the volunteers from over 12 trusts around the region.

RamsTrust Vice Chair and long time Supporters Direct board member Elaine Dean said "Brian is a huge loss to the football world and was taken far too soon. However, his legacy of supporters' involvement in sport governance will live on. He will never be forgotten'.

Brian leaves a wife Catherine and a  daughter Emily.

Overreaction
Latest
Monday, January 19 2015

After the disappointing and unexpected defeat by our local rivals from down the A52 Brian Clough Way on Saturday, a 'supporter' ran on the pitch and appeared to attack a Forest player. There was also video footage of so-called Derby fans damaging the car belonging to Forest's Chairman.

RamsTrust was asked to comment on this behaviour by the Derby Telegraph. Chair Jim Wheeler said there was “no excuse” for a fan to invade the pitch after Derby's defeat.

Jim also said that he hopes the incident will be “the last we see of this type of behaviour” and he joined other Rams fans in condemning the behaviour of the pitch invader.

He said: “The football violence of the past has largely, and thankfully, gone from the game and what the pitch invader did is completely indefensible.

“While I think we all appreciated that it was a local derby against Forest with emotions running high – especially with them winning the game in injury time – there is still absolutely no excuse for this type of behaviour.

“What I thought was interesting was how so many Derby fans were sharing the man’s picture on social media in a bid to help the police.

“Hopefully, Saturday will be the last we see of this type of behaviour at all and I would assume if he is charged and prosecuted he will be banned from attending matches for a very long time.”

RamsTrust also condemns attacks on cars and any sort of disorder which brings shame on our great club.
