Derby County Division One Champions 1974/1975 – January 1975
Continuing our look back at Derby’s second title winning season in 1974/75, here RamsTrust reviews the matches played in January 1975.
The year began with Derby only three points off the top with a game in hand but sat in ninth place, such was the congestion at the top of Division One. After a fraught FA Cup third round tussle with Division Two Orient, Derby’s first league game in January was against Liverpool on Saturday 11th with Kevin Hector returning from six matches out injured. Nearly 33,500 turned up to the Baseball Ground to see Derby emerge 2-0 winners against their title rivals, goals coming from Henry Newton just before half time and Franny Lee 10 minutes from the end – a photo of his finish and celebration below.

Next up for Derby on January 18th was a trip to Molineux to face mid-table Wolves. Derby had been hammered 4-0 in the same fixture the previous season but were to be far better in 1975, Henry Newton’s goal after 30 minutes giving the Rams a precious 1-0 away win with Derby’s defence holding firm against intense Wolves pressure after the break.

League progress in January was disrupted by FA Cup commitments and Derby saw the month out with a comfortable 2-0 Fourth Round win over Division Two Bristol Rovers in front of nearly 28,000 on a Monday night.
The league table at the end of January saw Derby sat in fifth place, now only two points behind leaders Everton and on a four match winning streak.
